We Play Music: The New Home of UK Talent

Published on March st, 2012

Following the inaugural We Play Music last month, it seemed impossible to top the quality and talent on show at this months event, but in fact it was surpassed. Presented with a wide array of fantastic artists, and brilliant co-hosting by Joe Grime, TDK, and Phaze One, the audience at the Queen Of Hoxton, on the 26th february, and the listeners to the live stream through dejavufm.com, were treated to an evening of pure entertainment.

From the moment the lights went down, the Queen Of Hoxton was alight with energy, Deja’s resident vibemakers Soneni and the Soul opening the night with their trademark good vibes and tremendous vocal, definitively announcing that We Play Music had started with a bang.

The second act G.R.E.E.d.S gave an electrifying set, moulding rap, spoken word, and rock beats to create a resounding and strong sound reinforced with deep meaning lyrically. A passionate approach continued with Lily Mc Kenzie‘s performance bringing a mix of soul, house and folk vibes, a sign of strong things to come with her EP ‘Breathe’ being released on the 4th March.

It’s a testament to George The Poet‘s poetry that, following full live bands, he managed to gain absolute attention of the Queen of Hoxton with just his voice and his words. Delivered with a commanding tone, his work was pregnant with ideas and had a strong sense of direction, that stunned the crowd and left them in awe. He was then followed by Juliette Ashby, an extremely talented singer songwriter, who gave a deep and emotional performance described by one audience member as simply ‘Amazing’, and I’m sure no-one could disagree with that view, it was a truly stellar performance.

My highlight of the evening however was Shakka’s performance. Delivering a blistering set, dynamic, fluid and full of energy, he left a lasting impression on many. From the delivery of his incredibly catchy track ‘Take Our Time’ to his rendition of Coldplay’s ‘God Put A Smile Upon Your Face’ it was flawless entertainment, and the best part was he seemed to be enjoying himself as much as the audience were enjoying the performance, a true show man, and certainly an artist who’ll come to prominence this year.

If we weren’t treated to enough by this point, the legendary Terri Walker took to the stage, and put her cold aside to bring her staggering vocal to We Play Music. Joined by Roses Gabor to sing her final number, we were given a strong reminder of why she is renowned as such an influential and important artist.

The final artist of the night, Shystie followed on from the live bands with a very different vibe, but all the more exhilarating. Her fast paced set bringing a big grime and UK funky vibe, gave a new level of excitement to the stage and the crowd, and her lightning quick delivery and dexterity coupled with some of the biggest sounding instrumentals of the year so far proved a formidable combination. With a new EP ‘Pink Mist’ in the pipeline, Shystie can only continue her ascension.

The 2nd ‘We Play Music’ live event, organised by the legendary Dj Dlux, showed that the initial event was not just a one-off, and that it in fact was the beginning of a very long a prosperous future at the forefront of UK Music. Bringing new talent and amazing vibes to the stage at the Queen Of Hoxton every month from now on it is set to become the place to be for up and coming and established artists to showcase their material.

The next ‘We Play Music’ Live will be held on the 25th March, and Dj Dlux’s We Play Music radio show is broadcast every sunday from 8-10pm.

We Play Music: Queen of Hoxton presents Kings of the UK Music scene

Published on January th, 2012

We Play Music hosted by Dj Dlux premiered its first live show on 15th January in the Queen of Hoxton, bringing bands and artists to you live and direct on Deja Vu fm. With talent from wall to wall and Deja’s own Joshua Jones and TDK co-presenting, it was always set to be a big night.

The opener of the evening Delilah accompanied by Stirra, started the night how it meant to go own, showcasing her promising new track, and ending on a beautiful rendition of Cry Me A River.

Next on was Dylema from 4WordMusic, who played an inspired set, and is surely one to watch for the coming year, likewise Tereza Delzz, whose new single ‘Secrets & Lies’ is out soon.

Tereza Delzz

With the first live band of the night, and full of charisma Cynikal and his Street Orchestra really got the crowd going, and his masterful lyricism and flow intertwined with the groove created by the Cajone and Guitar players gave a refreshing and positive sound. We were then blessed with the voice of Angel J to finish the first half, already established in the scene, but reaffirming her position as one of the best vocalists in the Urban Scene.

Opening the second half Dionne Reid set the levels high with a great vibe and an even greater voice, and Kenza maintained this with a strong set, accompanied by an amazing band, her hip hop medley being one of the highlights of the night, finishing on her new single ‘I Believe’. Jay Jay (Born 2 Sing) then brought a huge dancehall vibe to the Queen Of Hoxton, before making way for White Powder Gold, an act that made a huge mark on the night, combining big guitar riffs with a powerful vocal, almost Rage against the Machine like, but whatever it was they tore the place down! Soneni & The Soul finished the live bands for the night, getting absolutely everyone on their feet in approval.

To make the night, Big Narstie came on as a special guest to P.A his track ‘Gas Leak’ bringing a madness to the stage, and to the whole of the Queen Of Hoxton. With Deja’s D Power Diesle coming on too, to premiere his new track, a remix of an old Skepta classic, it brought the night to a riotous close.

The opening night of We Play Music turned the Queen Of Hoxton into a place for presenting future Kings and Queens of the UK Music Scene. and was a testament unto itself that We Play Music, but we don’t Play when it comes to Music. This night is only the beginning however, having kickstarted a revolution with a new concept in Urban Radio Culture, with Deja vu being at the forefront in bringing you the best up and coming talent in the UK scene.

Da Shark & The Major Review

Published on January th, 2012

Following a big build up last year with single releases in anticipation, Sharky Major dropped his new album ‘Da Shark & The Major’ just over two weeks ago to end 2011 with a bang, and start 2012 on a high.

The concept behind the album, is to present both sides of Sharky Major, hence the title, with a mixture of introspective and deeply lyrical tracks, and the more aggressive hyped tracks too. This is achieved masterfully and if you juxtapose ‘Dashed out the Car’ and ‘Inspirational’, you can see this for yourself.

‘Inspirational’, purveys a strong message of self-belief and encouragement to others. With great lines such as ‘the brain’s like a seed, and what it needs to keep growing, is knowledge and deep belief to keep going’, reinforcing this idea throughout and with such a strong feature on the vocal hook from Mz Angel J, and a great beat from Rapsz Katai, this is a stand out track encapsulating the reflective and authoritative side of Sharky Major.

‘Dashed out The Car’ however brings the hype and presence on the mic that Sharky Major’s known for. Scampz production reflects this too. With the remix featuring Frisco, Rival and Deja’s very own Diesle, making very big movements since it’s release last summer, it has reaffirmed Sharky’s great capacity to make absolute bangers.

Other notable tracks are the powerful opener ‘Main Event’ and ‘Dear God’ which shows his lyrical dexterity, and brings to the forefront important world issues, however every track on this album is strong, and with such anticipation for the release, Sharky Major hasn’t failed to deliver. In fact, he’s released one of the strongest Grime albums of 2011.
