After attending a screening for brand new Brit flick “Payback Season” I couldn’t wait to write up my thoughts on the film, however, before I give you my opinion on the film, here’s a little bit to tell you what the movie is about…

Jerome Davies is a talented, young footballer who has made it out of the council estate he grew up on. His younger brother and mum however, still live in the heart of the estate. Going back to visit his family leads Jerome into many complications due to his past which are now starting to seriously affect his future… A film filled with drama, excitement, love and friendship. Along with some very important messages…

The Cast

The movie stars Bafta Winner Adam Deacon as the lead role – Jerome Davies, a young footballer who enjoys the finer things in life, nice car, stunning penthouse apartment and a beautiful girl. For us as viewers it was a nice change to see Deacon in a positive role as oppose to roles he has played before in films such as “Kidulthood” and “Anuvva Hood”.

Deacon’s love interest in the film is played by Nichola Burley famed for her role in “Street Dance 3D”. Burley plays Lisa, a well-spoken and flirty yet firm journalist and is key to Jerome’s story. Her performance is brilliant in this film and I think that her “upper class” accent offsets brilliantly against the “urban” accent held by Deacon.
England football legend, Geoff Hurst, makes a cameo in the film and is a natural in front of the camera. Showing that there are many talents to footballers!

Anna Popplewell most famous for her roles in “The Chronicles of Narnia” trilogy, stars as Burley’s journalist friend who is holder of very important information in this film. Far from the high budget films that Popplewell is used to, she says “It’s great doing this. I think most actors I know are interested in doing something different; I am thrilled and delighted to be doing something so different to Narnia!”

Baron is the leader of the gang, played by David Ajala who has been in many films including “The Dark Knight” and “Kidulthood”. Ajala really does the character justice in this role, proving to be able to portray a gritty, dark character with such execution that you wouldn’t question that it was his real personality.

Leo Gregory plays Andy who is Jerome’s physiotherapist at the football club. A previous footballer who’s career ended due to injury, he now acts as a big brother to Davies, as well as a friend. Gregory who’s previous films have included “Green Street” is a true cockney and does his role immense justice. He comes across as a natural on screen and was a pleasure to watch. Almost like a plaster to Davies grazes, he’s made Deacon appeal to a whole new market.

Production

“Payback Season” was written and directed by Danny Donelly. Donelly is most famous for his work in music and labels such as “Suburban Base Records” and the creation of the Pure compilation series. The film was co-written by Jenny Fitzpatrick and produced by John Adams.
The soundtrack to the film includes; Maverick Sabre, Wiley, Chase & Status, Nero and Harry Shotta.

To sum up, I think that Deacon played a brilliant role, in a part I’m sure some of us would admit we didn’t think he would play. The rest of the cast compliment each other well and make the movie what it is – a brilliant British film. I think the way in which Danny Donelly has portrayed an urban, gritty movie with a positive message, showing hugely important messages has made a mark on British movies.

All in all, I would recommend you go and see this movie as soon as it’s released on 9th March 2012! This is deffo one for the DVD collection.

After the first live broadcast from Queen of Hoxton, Dlux returns with part 2 this Sunday, the current lineup features the likes of Shakka, Lily McKenzie, Soneni & The Soul, Juliette Ashby and more. If this wasn’t enough, Dlux announced via Twitter that the soulful Ms TERRI WALKER will also headline the pioneering radio broadcast.

Most avid Terri Walker Fans would have fallen in love with the colorful vivacious Chanteuse from her Mercury nominated debut “Untitled ” released in 2003. Since then she has had 2 other studio albums under her belt “L.O.V.E” (Mercury/2005) and “I Am” (Dekkor/2006).

In recent years the talented singer/songwriter has lent her talents to critically well received underground feats such as T.Williams’s ‘Heartbeat” and Donaeo’s “When Angel Sing” and more recently a track entitled “He loves me” produced by Donaeo and remixed by the legendary Mark Hill who is one half of Artful Dodger and now goes under the name Artful.

Terri is currently working on various projects with Salaam Remi (Amy Winehouse/Fugees) ,Truth & Soul (Aloe Blacc/Lee Fields), Skibeatz (Jay Z/Camp Lo) and Donaeo ( Party Hard/Im Fly) and Artful (Craig David/Corrine Bailey Rae) which all will be released prior to her next studio Album.
The new album will be a soulful rendition of everything she has experienced since her hiatus as a solo performer

Shania is a beautiful, admirable and determined 12 year old girl. She recently performed ‘top of her class’ in her SATs and has an avid passion for netball and football, playing on both teams for her school. Shania is very bright, friendly, charismatic and has high ambitions to become a fashion designer. Unexpectedly, a swelling appeared on Shania’s leg and the pain spread throughout Shania’s legs, hips and pelvis area.

After approximately 3 months and following various x-rays, consultations and finally an MRI identified that Shania was suffering from a rare form of cancer – Spindell Cell Sarcoma. By the time the cancer had been diagnosed, Shania had at this point lost the use of her legs and was in a wheelchair. Advice relating to the option of surgery was such that the family felt that the risks outweighed the possibility of success and would leave this vibrant and active young girl with a very limited lifestyle and years of pain and complications.

Shania began chemotherapy in August 2011 and after a number of cycles, months of pain and discomfort, time in hospital away from her family and friends, the loss of weight and her hair, it has recently been confirmed that Shania has been accepted for a proton therapy programme in the USA. This will mean three months away from home and Shania’s two sisters and one brother, but could mean that the tumour can be removed and that Shania’s prognosis would be much improved. It is hoped that this will take place within the next 6-8 weeks. We are asking for support from friends, family and anyone who would like to contribute a) to a fund to help support the day to day living expenses which are not covered by the programme b) any additional funds will be donated to MacMillan Cancer Research.

Shania’s aunt recently raised £2000 for MacMillan via shaving her head and a £5k run and the family are organising a Masquerade Ball. If you have, or know anyone who has something worthwhile to be donated for auction, there will be a celebrity auction/raffle as part of the event. ( Deja will be donating free recording studio time as part of the raffle ).
