Deja Vu’s Very own Dj Dlux catches up with Legendary London Based Producer Geoff Wilkinson from Us3 ahead of their performance at Under The Bridge (London) this Saturday 8th October.
Us3 are back with their 8th album “Lie, Cheat & Steal”, featuring NY based Puerto Rican rapper/spoken word artist Oveous Maximus , and acclaimed UK rapper (& MOBO Award winner) Akala . On the musical side Geoff employs some familiar Us3 faces in the shape of saxophonist Ed Jones & trumpet player Bryan Corbett, along with a dazzling array of London’s finest keyboard players.
The turntable skills of DJ First Rate are also to the fore. Musically the album is a kaleidoscope of sounds moving effortlessly from latin & flamenco-inspired sounds to the funky afrobeat of “(You Are) So Corrupt” to the hard-hitting title track. Oveous showcases both his rap & poetry skills on the blues-inflected “Wild West” and Akala tells a modern day parable that relates to us all on the breakbeat-fuelled “Puppet Master”.
Expect to hear all their latest music from their fantastic new album as well as all their hits!’
Us3 arose from the London jazz-dance scene of the late-80s to hit the charts on both sides of the Atlantic with a blend of hip hop and Blue Note jazz samples.
Their huge, irresitible hit ‘Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)’ (built on Herbie Hancock’s evergreen ‘Cantaloupe Island’) was a top 10 charter in the USA in 1993, and helped Blue Note achieve its first million-selling album when it was included on ‘Hand On The Torch’.
Producer Geoff Wilkinson has brought together a variety of brilliant musicians and fresh rappers for albums and live shows since then.
The Us3 release, ‘stop. think. run.’ (2009) featured brilliant young Stateside rappers Sene and Brook Yung along with a full complement of great UK jazz talent, making an eight-piece live band.

Expect a similar mix for this evening of urban bebop beats.
