So there is this thing called ‘based music’. Fans of Lil’ B will know what I am on about, but if you are not familiar with the Californian rapper, you probably do not have a clue.
‘Based music’, a phrase coined by Lil’ B is what I would best describe as a stream of consciousness, of not giving a s***, of saying whatever the hell you want to say kind of rap. Whether it keeps in time with the actual music seems not to be a consideration here. Song titles include ‘Violate My Bitch’ and ‘Suck My Dick Hoe’.
Simply, Brandon McCartney has created a based world, of which he is based king, and which has thousands and thousands of based followers. It is an Internet phenomenon reminiscent of Souja Boy’s take-off, the dances, the catchy phrases, and the ‘I don’t give a s***, I’m having fun’ kind of attitude.
It served Soulja Boy well and it looks to serve Lil B in just the same way. The people like what he is doing, he has great novelty value, plus a sudden drought in his material seems unlikely.
Will he be as successful as Soulja or Gucci Mane? Really it depends on how long the public are willing to buy into it. Much like Lil B, neither Soulja nor Gucci are what you would usually deem lyrically intelligent rappers, but they have other attributes. Wit, humour, and the ability not to take themselves too seriously, all of which seem to be selling like hot cakes these days.
From the moment I heard Gucci slur the lyrics ‘girls are like buses every fifteen minute they one, now they like potato chips, I just cannot have one’ I could not help but fall for his ridiculousness. Needless to say, the ice cream addition to his facial tattoos more recently, has only added more fuel to the already Gucci Mane infested fire.
Lil B, the somewhat foul mouthed rapper who surprisingly does not swear in front of his mother, might have to start pulling stunts like Gucci to keep himself afloat. As with everything the novelty does eventually wear off, but for the time being this young man continues to make his musical mark quite swimmingly.
