DJ Fearney: Professor Green welcome…

Professor Green: Thank you for having me.

DJ Fearney: The new single “Remedy” is out on the 4th June, loving the new video and the whole Shoreditch vibe you’ve got going on.

Professor Green; Well I had to shoot it in my neck of the woods didn’t I?! It’s a lot of my mates in it as well.

DJ Fearney: OK, well this is what I was going to ask you. Is it a set up or are they real people you found on the street drunk one night?

Professor Green: Nah, we got progressively drunk as the night went on! A lot of the people were my friends but a lot of the people were brought in by the production company as well, it’s a mixture which made a good vibe, it’s always good to have new people around.

DJ Fearney: Did you get randoms though that were just hanging around?

Professor Green: Erm, not so much. We done like a guerrilla performance in The Hoxton Pony, we were just walking by and we thought why don’t we go and perform it in here and get some footage. We were just kinda roaming about East all day and it looks really fun, and it was. People were just like having a house party at one point, because there is a lot of stop and starts when you do videos, the producers were like ok stop and people were like, no. They were all having a good time by then, once the drinks start flowing you can’t really control the situation too tough! It was fun, but the outdoor performing shots were done at like 3 in the morning, so they had to take a lot of red out my nose and my hands look grey!

DJ Fearney: I saw you in that kebab shop on the corner, the one that people only go to after 2am!

Professor Green: I didn’t eat nothing though, nah.

DJ Fearney: Good call! But they do a nice chips and cheese!

Professor Green: I hate cheese! Serious, I’m probably one of the only 2 people in the world but I hate cheese.

DJ Fearney: There’s something people didn’t know about you! Ok, so you’ve obviously made no secret that you’re with Millie from Made In Chelsea. She’s in the video at one point. On Twitter recently, you made a comment on people making comments on your relationship and social class and things like that. Have you had a lot of negative press about it?

Professor Green: Not negative press but people were just so loose in pointing out the difference in background. I had another interview and I was like if the difference was race or sexual orientation would they be as quick to point it out and would it be accepted? Because what they are essentially doing is calling her a snob and me a commoner. I mean I am common as muck but it doesn’t really dictate who I am as a person. It seems to have quietened down a little bit now.

DJ Fearney: You’ve been on “Made in Chelsea” is that right?

Professor Green: Yeah, she (Millie) was getting it in the neck from the producers.

DJ Fearney: Surely they want that kind of press though?

Professor Green: Nah not because of that, just because they were like we’re not able to film that aspect of your life anymore and as I understand it, that was a big part of the second series. Irrespective of if she was with me or someone else, she was not up for having that aspect of her life filmed anymore. But just so as they could join the dots, not that there was anyone who didn’t know we were together come the time the tv programme came out, I was like cool, they can have a flash of my face for 2 seconds.

DJ Fearney: So would you go into acting or anything like that?

Professor Green: Maybe. I mean I’ve done bits and bobs in my music videos, I’ve always tried to kind of push the boundaries a little bit with my videos. When we done “Never Be A Right Time” they asked me if I wanted an actor to play the role or if I wanted to do it. It took me out of my comfort scene, especially having to perform acts of intimacy on camera! I’m not one for PDA’s so that was all a bit strange but I like to push boundaries and take myself out of my comfort zone so maybe. But I’ve kind of typecast myself haven’t I? With the tattoos…

DJ Fearney: Hmm, I dunno

Professor Green: Well you’re not gonna see me playing a Tudor any time soon are ya?!

DJ Fearney: You’ve grown the hair though, got a new look…

Professor Green: I have yeah. I was like, I might as well do it now, I’ve never done it. Since I was about 9 I’ve a shaved head so I was like yeah…

DJ Fearney: Really? How did you get away with that at school?!

Professor Green: I grew up in Hackney innit?!

DJ Fearney: In your album you are obviously quite open about not always having a great life from when you were younger. Like in “Read All About It” where you talking about life without a parent. What’s been your hardest struggle do you think, what’s been the hardest thing?

Professor Green: Do you know what. Probably finding my feet, which everyone struggles with growing up I think. There’s a lot of pressures you know, changing from child to adult for anyone, mine were a bit more difficult because I didn’t have a father figure there. I think for a boy, it’s incredibly important. I had a lot of anger and resentment that I had to rid myself of and I actually didn’t rid myself of it until my father passed. It was either make or break for me then, it was like I’m gonna let this go with him or I’m gonna hold onto it and the rest of my life is going to continue as it has been. I’m lucky to have self awareness, a lot of people don’t have that. You know, there’s a point in your life when your reasons become excuses, a lot of people hold onto those excuses for a long time. That’s the reason they act out and behave a certain way but you know, I made a choice to let go of all of that.

DJ Fearney: I think that you are setting a good example because you’re showing that you wouldn’t want the same for your child. Am I right by that?

Professor Green: That’s exactly what the song is about. It’s a massive thing for me, it’s not on the cards just yet! Before we get into that! But it’s a massive thing for me to do it and to do it right.

DJ Fearney: Ok so if we go a bit back for people that really know about you, obviously Jump Off, you were in MC battles…

Professor Green: Lippy little shit weren’t I?!

DJ Fearney: Good days though! And it’s back The Jump Off, have you been to one of the newer ones?

Professor Green: I haven’t been able to, every Monday something comes up. What’s it saying?

DJ Fearney: It’s alright. The Booty Bounce, I had to leave at that point, I thought this is too much for me!

Professor Green: Yeahhhh, I remember some scary things happening on that stage! What are the battlers like?

DJ Fearney: They’re good. The one I went to not that many people came up at first though so I’d like to see more people down there you know, there’s a lot of talent out there.

Professor Green: I find it fun to watch, I still watch bits and bobs occasionally on YouTube.

DJ Fearney: Would you say you’re still in touch with the streets and street music?

Professor Green: Yeah I’m still very much in touch with who’s coming up and I still work with people who’s music I like, that doesn’t change. I think people sometimes feel a way about reaching out or asking me to do something because they put me on a pedestal that I don’t put myself on. I just done a verse for Smiler, I just done a verse for Dru Blue, I’ve been working with Dream McClean and Rinse a lot. I’m just easy, if I like someone’s music I’m not in this whole talk to my manager thing. Unless I don’t wanna work with you! “You have to go through my manager, my label just don’t want it to happen!” That sometimes is the case, especially when it comes to release dates and stuff if you’re talking about the commercial aspect but you know if you’re just throwing something online, you don’t need to worry about that. I’m still just a fan at the end of the day, I love music and I like the healthy competition. Like when I do stuff with Dream, I have to be so careful not to get eaten on a track. He’s crazy.

DJ Fearney: Yeah definitely. There’s a lot of talent out there and a lot of up coming stuff.

Professor Green: And there’s a platform for it now, finally.

DJ Fearney: I know, it’s taken how long?

Professor Green: Well I’ve been doing this 10 years…

DJ Fearney: Wow. Well Déjà vu have been supporting all the way!

Professor Green: All the way!

DJ Fearney: I’ve obviously got to talk to you about your new drink “Remedy” beer, is this true?

Professor Green: Absolutely. It’s nearly 6% too, not for the light hearted!

DJ Fearney: Where can people buy it?

Professor Green: I’m not sure what’s gonna happen with it. We’re doing a launch on 3rd June at The Hoxton Pony where the first 100 people through the doors will get a free bottle of it. It’s gonna taste quite good, we did a big tasting. Basically what happened was we had to taste 25 beers, unfortunately I couldn’t make that but my mates Rufus and Lewis and my manager and a few people from the label went down and had a really hard time tasting 25 beers! They picked what they liked out of the beers, that got whittled down to 4 and I went in and chose what I liked out of the 4 beers and it’s being brewed at the moment. So no one has actually tasted the Remedy yet, but I’ve got high expectations for it!

DJ Fearney: So 3rd of June is the date!

Professor Green: It actually started as an April Fools! Rufus who filmed the tv show just done this viral show and got the bottles made up and it all looked really serious. A lot of people were like yeah April Fools we’re not that stupid! Then a brewing company got in touch and were like would you like to brew a beer, I thought why not, Diddy’s got his vodka innit?!

DJ Fearney: So can anyone go this party?

Professor Green: Yeah! As long as they’re over 18. Hoxton Pony – 3rd June.

DJ Fearney: Obviously you’re playing at a big festival in East London in June, how does it feel to perform on home turf?

Professor Green: Amazing. To be able to get on that stage and start “Jungle” and the first line of that song is ‘welcome to Hackney’. Can’t beat that.

DJ Fearney: It’s gonna be a big performance! Professor Green it’s been brilliant speaking to you!
